| When high fire danger
conditions exist it is necessary to employ aggressive initial attack procedures.
When the Biscuit Fire was started by lightning there were extreme fire
conditions. The past experience of the Smokejumpers at the Cave Junction
Base was that if initial attack did not begin within an hour after a fire
started it would probably grow to project proportions. The lookout
stations in the Biscuit fire area had been abandoned and Smokejumpers were
not prepositioned at the Cave Junction airport. The Florence Creek
component of the Biscuit Fire was not discovered until two days after the
fire was ignited and initial attack did not begin until the third day. |
