A major textile dyer began experiencing snagging of textiles in large dyeing vats.
A Coyote Aerospace team investigated the problem and found that the stainless steel vats were
undergoing pit corrosion due to the combination of chemicals being used in the dying process.
It was demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the dyer, that the vat manufacturer had substituted the
wrong alloy of steel during manufacturing of the vats. The accompanying Scanning Electron Micrograph
shows the damage that was found. This micrograph along with Auger electron analysis coupled with
research in the LANL technical library demonstrated the sourceof the problem.
